Common settings on the first screen

In 1.6.0, settings are divided into four categories, with only common values on the first screen. The in-game pause menu and guides have changed with them.

Players told us that settings were complicated. As features grew, explanations and choices kept filling the screen. Even knowing what to change did not make its location easy to find. For 1.6.0, I reconsidered the steps for finding and changing a setting.

The first screen has four categories: Controls, Display & Sound, Saves & Backup, and App & Help. Below them are the current values for menu confirmation, scaling, volume and touch haptics. Tap a value to open its choices and return to the same screen after choosing. Common settings are easier to find when explanations and multiple controls are not all expanded at once.

Tasks with several choices, such as controller assignments, display effects and backups, have their own screens. This means some tasks take one more step. If you already know the setting you want, search can take you directly to the screen that holds it.

The first pause screen lists Resume, Quick Save, Quick Load, Game Speed, Manage Save Slots, Game Settings, Tools and Quit Game. The Game Speed title, current multiplier and arrow are centered like the other buttons. Press it to open choices below its right edge: 0.25×, 0.5×, 1×, 2× or 3×. Choosing keeps the game paused. A speed that changes often no longer needs a trip into Game Settings. Quit Game stays at the bottom, and a held direction stops at the end of the list.

The menu confirm rule is explicit too. Nintendo A and PlayStation ○ are the defaults; Xbox uses B. You can switch to the other button in Settings. The app displays the actual A/B or ○/× names from the connected controller, so you do not have to learn a separate description of button positions. Game-button assignments stay separate.

For a game without a chosen quick-save slot, Quick Save picks the first empty, unlocked slot starting at slot 1. A previously chosen slot or Disabled is left as it was. Running out of empty slots does not overwrite an existing save; you are asked to choose a slot yourself.

Calling Quick Save and Quick Load repeatedly in a short time could freeze the app. Now the next request is rejected until the current operation finishes, and repeated input is ignored for another 0.5 seconds afterward. No requests are queued to run later. On iOS, save-file work is separate from drawing the screen and serialized with automatic saving.

Keeping the display awake during play and pausing when a controller in use or headphones disconnect now happen automatically. On iOS, the app also rechecks the connected-controller list in case a disconnection notification is missed. When no other controller or external keyboard remains, the touch buttons and layout are restored together. Reconnecting a controller does not resume the game automatically.

When a menu changes, its guides must follow the same route. The save and load, rewind, cheat, controller and backup guides now have wording, highlights and progression conditions that match the new structure. The Korean interface uses phonetic spellings of Quick Save, Quick Load and Save Slot consistently in menus, guides and alerts.

Automated checks cover repeated input, menu navigation, save ordering and controller-state changes. VoiceOver, TalkBack, and Bluetooth and USB-C disconnection still need checks on physical devices. This record describes the changed behavior and its design reasons; it does not claim verification on every device and game.

Controller settings chosen by pressing a button

Previously, a function was chosen for each controller button. From 1.5.0, you can choose the function first, then press the button you want to use for it.

A guide that points at what to press

First-time users had trouble finding where to import a game or save. In 1.4.0, a guide points to each control in turn so users can learn by doing.
