Controller settings chosen by pressing a button

Previously, a function was chosen for each controller button. From 1.5.0, you can choose the function first, then press the button you want to use for it.

Up to 1.4.0, the controller button settings were a list of the controller's buttons. Each button was given a function, so finding which button held quick save meant reading the list from the top. To use a button you were used to, you first had to know what it was called.

Now it starts from a list of functions. The game's buttons and shortcuts such as quick save and pause are shown with the button each is on now. Choosing one opens a prompt to press a button, and the button pressed on the controller takes the function.

Pressing two buttons together during setup assigns the function to that combination. You can use R + B for quick save, or the left trigger with D-pad down for quick load. While both are held, neither input reaches the game, so pressing them to save does not move the character. The first button still reaches the game until the second is pressed.

A D-pad direction cannot be assigned on its own. Assigning it another function would stop it moving the game in that direction. Two D-pad directions cannot be combined either, because moving a thumb diagonally could trigger the function by accident. Pressing only a direction shows a message asking you to press it with another button.

Pressing a button another function was using moves that button to the new function and marks the old one as having no button, so one button never does two things at once. Assignments can be kept for this game only, for the whole system, or for a controller model, and during play they open straight from the pause menu.

While the prompt is waiting for a button, controller input is not used to move through the screen. The same update lets the Library, Settings and alerts on iPhone and iPad be moved through with a controller and keyboard, so the prompt keeps a button pressed for assignment from also pressing something else on the screen.

This has not yet been checked with a real controller on Android.
