Screens and controls for each fold direction
Refined pictures and controls on iPhone Duo and Android foldables. Single-screen games move controls to the sides; DS and 3DS keep room for both screens and touch input.
Screen dimensions alone cannot describe a foldable layout. A closed device uses its outer display; opening it divides the space left to right or top to bottom depending on the hinge. This update adjusts game pictures and controls for those differences on iPhone Duo and Android foldables.
For single-screen games on a vertical hinge, controls are grouped at the sides. Select, Start and Pause also take less of the center. Button sizes stay the same while the picture grows within the space clear of controls.
DS and 3DS retain their existing layout for two screens and lower-screen touch input, including the layouts with a 1:1 split between display and controls. Horizontal-hinge layouts also continue to separate the picture and control regions.
On the folded Duo, the area beside the camera is no longer left entirely empty: the picture can use the space below it. Moving Pause down enlarges the DS touch screen. With a controller connected, the screen pair is centered below the camera.
Library, Settings and dialogs were checked too. Fixed navigation buttons that shifted after rotating or folding Duo, and kept Play visible below the cartridge. Controls avoid the camera even when another sheet opens from a sheet.
When a controller hides touch buttons, the game picture uses the available space. Separate previews were made for touch controls and controller connections to compare them. Game scenes on this website are illustrative images used to show the layout.
